Constantly amused...by pompous, slaggy abusers

I am not sure if I should say amazed or amused..

I suppose I find it a little funny but am also opened mouthed gaffawing at some things I read so amazed has to come in there.. at what? at people..

There are 3 culprits..... the pompous ones, the slaggers and the abusers

We have created Down that Little Lane as a place to support unique, handcrafted and not widely available pieces (you are not going to find our sellers in David Jones) and we also are very keen to be  quality not quantity so if we already have someone representing a certain area and another applies that covers the same I have to turn them down, even if I love what they do.. Sad but it is so we keep the site fresh and easy for our customers to find what they want not pages and pages of identical items. As such the site is by invite only so anyone can apply but they need to be accepted by moi

So what am I amazed by here.. the amount of declines that actually write back to me, not asking for polite feedback, more than happy to give that but the ones that say " do you know who I am?" " Do you know how many stores I sell in?" "You should WANT me on your site just so you can say I am there" .. It makes me so glad I said no as they clearly don't get what we are about

But there are more....Facebook slagging

I promote our sellers items on FB... they are gorgeous, some are handmade, some are expensive and some are one offs and completely unique.

Most of the time you get lovely messages but once in a while you get the negative nancys.. " It's too expensive" "Where would I put that?" "Why would I pay that for a hat when I can get one from ... for less" " but it is just cut paper?".. ok so don't buy it, put it where it is intended for use, go to... and buy it there as it is not the same item and I like ours more, so go cut the paper and create it yourself.. I dare ya....

Or better than that, keep your comments to yourself and think about the feelings of the person who made it that you just stabbed in the heart with your cruel writing.

And the last one.....Using and abusing

I spend endless hours promoting our sellers as do our PR team, we get them coverage they would never have had the time or reach to manage themselves then what do they do? Message the contact with their private link? Ask the mag to use only their name not DTLL.. OMG the total audacity.. well needless to say I take note and find I don't work so hard to get them out there next time around

I needed to write it to understand it I suppose.. I will just put it down to being a different breed, not thinking first or just not understanding what they have actually done..

Have you come across them in your personal life? Business too? How do you deal with them?

  2. Not sure if you need one, but sending you a hug. Can't believe that people still don't adhere to the old saying, if you can't say anything nice don't say ANYTHING.
I think your site is AMAZING and can see that ALOT of hard work and commitment goes into creating what DTLL.
I just have one wish.... and that is to have a credit card exclusively for your site that the bill for never arrives!

  6. I ignore them, if I were to engage in a conversation with them it would only be a total waste of my time as these are people that cannot be swayed otherwise.

You are doing an amazing job with all of your work, be true to your vision and be proud of the way you run your business!

I am so proud I burst and all for the wonderful people involved in DTLL.. hence the outrage when someone does the polar opposite x

I wouldn't dare give my opinion on these people....I would be arrested.....being in sales I "meet" them everyday and often wonder why they are thinking of buying what I am selling because everything is always, not good enough, too small, in the wrong area, haven't got this or that included............for my sins I sell new build homes...DTLL is the best and so is my beautiful daughter Tessa !!!!!

  8. I don't know why I'm constantly amazed / amused by the things that people do. You think after 40 years I'd 'get it' to some degree... but I just don't. I'll never understand the competitive, me-me-me attitude that some people have, nor the sheer audacity of the things that they do. It boggles my mind. Boggles. And that's not even a word I use regularly. x

    1. You won't ever get it as its just not you..

boggles is a great word.. when I share my blog on google+ it asks for a title despite having one as such so it titled this blog post "numptys" now thats not a word I use often too but they are.. totes numptys!!

  9. I get people's rudeness at markets, that's why I don't do them anymore. Such ugliness we could never understand my love. Ignorence is bliss. Let's have a coffee/tea/wine soon, I'd love to tell you about NYC.

  10. Oh dear, what is wrong with people?? Do they go into Tiffany's & say "i could get a crappy version at Diva"?? I don't think so, why on earth would they bother doing that to you then?? Clearly their taste is up their bottom if they can't appreciate the time & respect you show to smaller designers & aim for unique, not ordinary. Their loss, what can you possibly gain from burning bridges like that??
One day they might do what i am going to do - after 12 years in design, i ended up with products in over 50 stores around the world, now i want to scale right back & go the other way, incredibly small, unique, exclusive - where would i be if i pissed off all my suppliers & would-be-suppliers/ supporters if i threw my weight around so ungracefully?? Hmmm, they need to learn many lessons, MANY.
Clearly you are doing beautifully without the mass producers & the mass consumers, that is what makes your gorgeous store such a treat. It's special!! Good for you for speaking up, love Posie

  11. well, I think you are amazing, just quietly. I am hugely appreciative of how active in promoting your sellers you are and I love that this site is different from all the rest in being a tiny bit exclusive... even if my own nose was slightly miffed when I was originally rejected! I certainly wouldn't have sent a snarky note though, your choice is your choice and I took the attitude that I just needed to lift my game. Had I slagged you, I am sure you would not have contacted me a few months later to ask me to reapply! What goes around comes around Tessa... keep up the good work, these days Im even more selective about where I place my products and I am the one rejecting boutiques and online channels if I don't feel they fit my brand -- I stick to just a few and work hard on those instead of diluting my brand and spreading myself everywhere! Thanks DTLL for making me feel a little bit special and part of a unique collective of talented brands and makers! x

  12. Tessa - you said it, you are a different breed. And you should be immensely proud of that. People who burn bridges or lord themselves over others are probably the stupidest people on the planet.

I come across these 3 Culprits DAILY in my work (author and children's book reviewer) and I deal with it by gently icing. I'm not nasty, I'm not aggressive - I just take a breath and step backwards and either instantly or delicately pull contact altogether, depending on the situation.

    It's self-preservation and it's powerful and although I don't dwell, I have a loooong memory.

The air is always thinner, the higher up the mountain you go. Enjoy the fresh air and freedom from 3 Culprits!

    :)
