My style can best be described as classic with a hearty dose of eclecticism. That definition applies to my home, my relationships and myself. For example right now I'm working a bright red hair-do with shortly clipped sides. It's the way I roll. I've also got three young sons, Ed (6), Raph (4) and Sonny (3), so I love fabulous things, but I love practicality more. So in short, if I'm going to own it, it's got to be useful and a little bit different.

Picking my most favourite 5 products from Down That Little Lane is some kind of torture, but here goes.

1. Growing up on Adelaide's metropolitan beaches, I've become quite partial to lazy days by the seashore. These Sombrilla's are what  Prince Eric is to Ariel. A match made in heaven.

2. My classic style with a touch of bam! lends itself to accent colours. So a room in my house might be 70% white, 20% complementary neutral and 10% accent colour. Right now I'm massive on yellow. Can't get enough. Goes without saying I'm all over these Elvis cushions. The added bonus? They're made in Australia.

3. I have an obsession with Chevron and I also like to keep things simple. So marry chevron (in pastel colours none the less) with disposable plates and I have a party on my hands. I don't care if my sons think pink is for girls, next birthday they will be scooping their cake of these babies.

4. I'm mad for religious artefacts. In my home I have a marble Buddha next to a pressed metal Jesus…did I mention my approach to spirituality is also eclectic? Just love one another for goodness sake. Anyhow, I digress. I love this clay decor cross, perfect for hanging by the front door of my 1910 house, reminding me to set my intentions for every time I enter and exit the house. Peace be with the world (inside my own four walls and out), and so it is.

5. I love to entertain and understand that sometimes a cup of punch is good medicine. Best dispense it from this then...

Lucy runs the most fabulous site She Shopped and you can find her on FB here to keep up with all her fab finds x

When did you start your business and how did it come about?

I started almost 2 years ago.  I worked/ran for our family business in Adelaide for 16 years and when my parents decided to move to Tasmania to be with my sister who was expecting her first child, I was left thinking 'what now?'.  I was looking forward to being an Aunty (I can't have children of my own) and set about shopping like a crazy person to spoil the new baby.  My sister didn't know what she was having so everything had to be neutral and I found it quite hard to find unique items for them.  I started researching materials and floating ideas with my sister (who is the truly artistic person in our family) and thought 'I'll just make a few things and see what happens'.  In the mean time, my partner and I moved to Victoria and I decided to actually give it a go and made a few bookends, mobiles and money boxes and listed them on a handmade website.  I made a few sales and made the decision to open my own website and stock, along with my own handmade items, the great kids toys and clothes I'd come across while shopping for my new nephew.

Why did you choose your business name?

I actually wanted Ziggy Pickles as Ziggy was one of my nicknames when I was a kid but it was already taken!  The store is in the UK but I didn't want to copy it so I chose Ruby.  Big mistake though - I get called Ruby all the time, as people think it's my name.

What have you most enjoyed in your career so far?

The learning curve.  This couldn't be more different from my previous career and I am the most un-crafty person alive so the learning process has been amazing but sometimes frustrating.  Everything takes me longer.  The picture I have in my head can take a few goes to get right when trying to make a new item as all the materials are things I've never worked with before.  After 2 year though, it is much easier and I know my limitations.

Have you had any major highlights, personal or business in the last few years?

No major highlights but I must say that every time a customer orders a handmade or custom item is a highlight for me!

What inspires or motivates you?

I'm inspired by new fabrics and materials and making things that aren't mainstream.  I don't follow trends, which could be a mistake, but I like that point of difference.

and lastly tell me one things about yourself that you love but has nothing to do with business..

I like that I'm adaptable.  Change doesn't bother me, I just pick up and move on.

The gift of giving

This week I have never been more grateful for anything more.. the gift of giving..

DTLL turns One Year Old Next week. At the start of the year our gorgeous Bron asked what my one word for the year was....... mine was Epic and that it has been.

For any Mum doing the juggle it is not easy, for any wife trying to be the best partner whilst working full time it is not easy, for any individual trying to build a start up business on a budget it is not easy.. to try and do it all is exhausting but above all that it is exhilarating, it is empowering and it is exciting.

Along my journey there has been a constant theme, the gift of giving..

I have had amazing support from friends and family and I have actually had the opportunity to pass that gift on in sharing the knowledge I have learnt in the last few years. I have been given encouragement from people I have long admired (thanks Bron, Kirsty and Phoebe) and advice from those I used to watch in business and only hope I could be half as good as (thanks Kate).

I have had my fellow Mums pick me up and let me know its ok when I have been knocked down by the mother guilts (thanks Team Bishop and Sutherland and of course the amazing on line community that is the blogging world), the chats that meant so much at birthday parties (thanks Liz), the "hi are you ok's" at the gym (thanks Alex).. they have all been a gift that was given and they will probably never know how much it meant.

Most recently I was given a gift by my family that meant I could take some time away with my family (thanks Team White). My family are everything to me, my family are why I started DTLL, my life misson is to keep them secure and of recent I had lost that vision. I was just to busy to stay focused on it and it was making me sad. Our holiday let me re connect and gave me back my drive, my vitality and my ME..

So this week I am grateful for the gift of giving. I can be given for free and is priceless.

I heart my body 2012...

Our relationship with our body is always going to be confusing.. the magazines and TV will always make sure of that but loving your body is so much more than the literal shape.

Loving your body should be about what it can do, what it has done and what you can teach it to do. The sooner you find those things the sooner you will find your inner strength to love your body through every stage in its life.

I can't tell you how much I regret totally pigging out with my first pregnancy.. it has left my tummy a tad stretched but you know what I have got my fitness back and I really couldn't care. I am slim (I work hard to be so) and in the grand scheme of things I don't really give a toss that it is a little creased. I have my kids, my body allowed me that and that works for me.

What do I love about my body?
I love that those shoulders belong to my Dad.
I love that their definition comes from running to far off places.
I love that my belly once held both of my babies.
I love that my legs are strong and that have carried me through 3 Ironmans
I love my tattoos as each one is for someone I love

most of all I love my scar on my back..
it is massive, it can't be covered but it never stopped me from being a successful model in an industry that is all about perfection.
it has ensured I have a husband who loves me for me because I wouldn't choose to sleep next to it each night unless I loved the person it bestowed.
it caused me much taunting as a kid but that made me a toughy

So you see I love my body, the good bits and the bad. It is mine. I own it. I make it what it is and I am responsible for how it will look after me as I age.

Truly she sort of is my love.. you see Cherie has been such a blessing for me and DTLL and I sort of love her guts!!.. Ok over to Cherie

Before Tess invited me to join the team at DTLL, I was really quite miserable working in a job that saw me working night shifts, & sitting at a computer for the entirety of those night shifts.

And so I would literally spend my nights trawling DTLL’s beautiful wares, whilst juggling a busy switchboard in my super stressful role.

In fact, DTLL became my happy place while I was in fact, in a fairly unhappy place {professionally speaking}.

Who’d have thunk all that trawling would lead me to managing the social media for DTLL? Not I. No siree!

Life really is beautiful like that, it delivers you opportunities when you need them, & want them the most.

I love this necklace.  I love ceramics.  I love clouds.  I love daydreaming.  I love blue.  This is all of those things; in one outstanding piece of jewellery.

When I was a little girl, I used to sing ‘somehwere over the rainbow’ to my little sister; all the time.  As soon as I saw this on DTLL, I knew I had to have it.  And so I added it to my trolley, checked out, & plan to now put it up in Max’s ‘big boy room’ as a celebration of his childhood, & mine.

This would suit our kitchen, to.a.tee.  As soon as there’s room on my credit card, I’ll be snapping up these rustic bad boys quicker than you can say, ‘oh my god, look at those darling rustic bad boys!’.

There is no better colour than yellow.  And to date, there has been no leather satchel that has moved me the way this yellow leather satchel does.  It it just happiness, tied up two pretty yellow leather buckles.

I saw this wooden ‘little boy’ nightlight, & it made me think it needs to be on my son’s bedside, while I read stories to him as he drifts off to sleep.  There is something about this sweet light that is just so … romantic.

Cherie is of course Social Media Manager for DTLL so you will often find her on our Facebook Page but mainly you will find her in her happy place at Raising Master Max and sometimes chatting over here at We Heart Life

Q&A with our Giveaway

When did you start your business and how did it come about?
I started my business in 2011 as a new mum. I was looking online for prints for my little girl Zoey and couldn't find what I was after so designed a few of my own because I wanted something different and unique to what was already on offer. I then started giving them to friends as gifts which were a big hit and now I am sharing my unique designs with you. What started as a hobby and experiment has since blossomed into a successful small business.

Why did you choose your business name?
The reasons behind why I named my business May and Belle hasn't been revealed to date… but stay tuned, all will be revealed in the coming months ;)

What have you most enjoyed in your career so far?

What I have enjoyed about running my own business so far is the flexibility it gives me with being a mum. I choose my own hours and work around my home life and day care. I have also really enjoyed meeting lots of other fabulous work-from-home mums and am highly impressed with the professionalism and service that I have received from the purchases I have made through some great businesses online.

Have you had any major highlights, personal or business in the last few years?

A couple of major highlights in my business have been taking on some fabulous and very supportive stockists in the short time that I have been in business. I also recently had my first magazine feature in Shop Til You Drop which was very exciting. On a personal note, I now have a gorgeous and sweet little girl in my life and another bubs on the way whom I can't wait to meet!

What inspires or motivates you?
A big part of my inspiration and motivation is the support of family and friends and also all of the lovely feedback and reviews I receive online from fans and customers of mine.

and lastly tell me one things about yourself that you love but has nothing to do with business..
I LOVE plants, gardening and home improvement projects. I also love living so close to the beach and being able to walk down there whenever I like – it's soothing to the soul x

When did you start your business and how did it come about?

The question, ‘What about perfumed candles?’ came up in a conversation with my husband almost two years ago. I was ready for a complete career change (I had been modeling for the past 25 years!), and we were discussing possible avenues. It was important for me to create a business around something that I love, a business with integrity and a story behind it. My passion for fragrance and travel (not to mention beautiful products) made Voyager the answer to those many months of questions.

Why did you choose your business name?

I love the word ‘voyager’. For me it’s somewhat old-fashioned, but conjures someone who is intrepid, fearless, a pioneer with a sense of romance.

What have you most enjoyed in your career so far?

Honestly, the people who work with me on Voyager – from my candle manufacturer, perfumer, publicist, graphic designer and web designer, to my retailers - everybody is so very generous, open and encouraging. That has been a revelation to me. I am incredibly lucky to be surrounded by really good people.

Have you had any major highlights, personal or business, in the last few years?

Meeting my husband - for many reasons, but also because without him, there would be no Voyager.

What inspires or motivates you?

Travel both inspires and motivates me. As soon as I’m on that plane, it’s as if there is suddenly a whole lot more space in my brain for dreaming and creating. People who endeavour to make the world a better place inspire me. Creative people who are pushing boundaries inspire me - artists, musicians, photographers, writers...
And of course, the big one: Mother Nature.

Tell me one thing about yourself that you love but has nothing to do with business.
My spirit.

Come on Back....

I have had a dreamy week.. I got one of these because I am going here...

this is me on Hamo 5 years ago.. and I plan to re create this picture daily!

I had figured I couldn't go on holiday for a while (we haven't been anywhere in nearly 2 anyhow) because I need access to internet and a proper computer at all times... I also need it filled with all my work stuff and a huge amount of content I have to access daily for the magazines etc..

Well blow me down if my guardian angels didn't just pop up and get me one for my birthday in advance and then lend us accommodation they happen to own..

Seriously I am like walking on air. Yep I will still be working but it will be in P.A.R.A.D.I.S.E and it will be just me and my family with none of the daily grind that comes with working from home. I cannot wait and you know what I said Come on back... but why should I? I can just stay up on my cloud until we return to Sydney on my actual B Day :)

Kindred Spirits

Well I love unique gifts, I adore handmade and I am all about bespoke.. It is what Down that Little Lane tries to embody and promote. I would love to say these are new sellers of ours (and who knows maybe one day they will be) but they are not.. they are just so right up my alley I had to tell you all about them..

from father to child
kindred transforms the father's cherished shirt into an heirloom, now enjoyed by the next generation.

I can turn my husbands Ozwald Boatengs's into a shirt for my Master Harrington? I L.O.V.E that!!..
